Choice Hotels' new upscale brand opened its 10th property last week with the Cambria Suites at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. The first Cambria Suites opened in Boise in 2007, "definitely off Broadway," brand president William Edmundson joked when we talked for the November cover story on the innovative brand.
Cambria does have its Broadway location, or close, with a property under development in Manhattan a block from Madison Square Garden and Penn Station. Cambria Suites also has locations lined up in Brooklyn and Los Angeles, showing the versatile all-suites offering can fit in mixed-use, airport, suburban and now urban markets.
Execs admitted they had hoped to have more than 10 hotels open by now, but in today's economic (read credit) environment, hitting double figures isn't that upsetting. The addition of Steve Joyce, Choice Hotels' CEO and a former exec at Marriott, signals an even bigger emphasis on the upscale product. Look for a lot more than 10 opening in the next couple years.
