Caruso Affiliated eked out a narrow victory against General Growth Properties last week over a hotly contested new project, Americana at Grand, in Glendale, Calif. (below). General Growth, which owns a major mall near the site of the proposed Caruso lifestyle center, spent millions of dollars fighting the developer, ultimately forcing the city to hold a special election to decide its fate. Despite the intense lobbying, Glendale citizens gave Caruso — and independent developers everywhere — an important triumph in a recent citywide referendum.
