Legacy builds itself a new Town Center

DALLAS - One of the Southwest's most successful business parks is getting a new town center. The 2,665 Legacy business park in Dallas' north suburb of Plano is already home to more than 36,000 office workers in headquarters facilities owned by Electronic Data Systems, J.C. Penney, Dr Pepper, Frito-Lay and others.

Now the 14-year-old development will for the first time have a town square, complete with shops, apartments, a hotel and offices surrounding a three-acre central park. Called Legacy Town Center, the 75-acre mixed-use complex was planned by new urbanist Andres Duany, designer of Florida's award-winning Seaside community and other similar projects.

The development team includes Legacy owner Electronic Data Systems, Post Properties of Atlanta, Dallas retail developer Karahan Cos. and Argyle-Leddy Hospitality Co. of San Antonio. Construction began in mid October on the first phase which includes 360 luxury apartments, 300,000 sq. ft. of retail space and a 400-room Doubletree Hotel built along landscaped boulevards and overlooking the park.

"It's the building of a new neighborhood and village that will be very special for the Dallas area," said Post

Properties chairman John Williams. "We've got to return ourselves to the way neighborhoods were built many years ago."

Post ultimately plans to have 2,700 apartments at Legacy Town Center constructed as low- to mid-rise buildings lining the streetfronts.
