The Macerich Co. named Gregory Zimmerman vice president of real estate. Formerly of the Rouse Co., Zimmerman will work on the potential expansion of Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek, Calif., and entitlement for La Cumbre Plaza in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse Inc. will develop and build Phase II of the American Tobacco Historic District in Durham, N.C., which will include 170,000 square feet of office and retail space. The firm also will handle Phase III. Struever also has purchased Crompton Mills, a former lace and dying mill, in West Warwick, R.I., for redevelopment. Working with Westerman Realty, the company plans 150,000 square feet of office and retail and 100 townhouse units.

MBH Architects hired Chris Coonan as studio director for the company's new Retail Development Studio. Coonan, who has 15 years experience in retail architecture, formerly worked for Target Corp.

Regional real estate developer and manager Rudolph/Libbe Properties Inc. named Kenneth Hicks Jr. vice president of retail development and leasing. Hicks was a partner at Michael Realty specializing in retail leasing and investment sales.

Edens & Avant named Jason Tompkins as chief financial officer. Tompkins was formerly vice president of finance and capital markets. The company also named Jay Matera executive vice president.

Empire Commercial Real Estate has begun construction on the 100,000-square-foot, $19.5 million Sierra Crossroads in Fontana, Calif. The center will include a Stater Bros. supermarket, Starbucks and Subway. Staubach Retail, a division of the Staubach Co., has promoted Scott Shillings to senior vice president of its Houston office. Jim Smith Jr., also of the Houston office, was named senior associate. In its Chicago office, Staubach Retail has promoted Ken Galvin to senior associate.

Sperry Van Ness hired Corey Waite as senior vice president of its office in Pasadena, Calif. Waite was formerly a senior managing director at CB Richard Ellis Global Corporate Services Business Development division.

CE Flushing LLC, an affiliate of Muss Development Co, will develop a 3.2 million-square-foot mixed-use residential and retail development in Flushing, N.Y. The project will include 725,000-square-feet of retail and 1,000 residences. The retail is set to open fall 2007.

Irvine, Calif.-based urban developer Hopkins Real Estate Group has hired Steve Soto as its director of government affairs. He will help expedite the company's developments through the municipal process. Soto is the former economic development director for the city of Westminster, Calif.

Grubb & Ellis Co. named Catherine Stephenson as vice president, national director of operations for the company's property management division. She has 20 years of commercial and retail real estate experience and was a principal at Manitou Management Consulting. The company also named Michael Dee senior vice president, national director of retail, transaction services.

The U.S. General Service Administration has handed over 44 acres of the former Southeast Federal Center in Washington, D.C. to Forest City Washington for redevelopment. The new development on the Anacostia River will include 3.2 million square feet of residential and 2 million square feet for commercial and retail.
