American retailers respond to national tragedy

The retailers below, along with many others, have given their support to the relief efforts.

Beall’s Inc. is contributing $30,000 to American Red Cross and United Way funds to help the victim’s of the attacks. A significant portion of the donation will come from the sale of merchandise with a patriotic theme.

Belk Inc. employees are collecting funds and compiling a book of prayers, poems, thoughts of encouragement and hope for the New York City Relief Fund and the victims’ families.

Eddie Bauer has raised more than $300,000 for the American Red Cross through a corporate donation and donations from employees and customers. The company has donated clothing in the New York-New Jersey area and has held fundraisers for the United Way’s September 11th Fund.

Federated Department Stores Inc., and its Federated Department Stores Foundation, has donated $100,000 to the American Red Cross to assist with the relief effort. Additionally, the Foundation will match dollar-for-dollar all employee contributions to the American Red Cross, up to a total of $150,000.

Gap Inc. has matched employee contributions for grief counseling services in New York and Washington D.C. and for scholarships for the children of firefighters and police officers killed while attempting to rescue victims of the attacks. Through its Gap Foundation, the company is donating to the September 11th Fund, set up by the New York Community Trust and United Way of New York City to direct financial resources where they are needed most. Gap has also established a scholarship in the name of Ron Gamboa, an employee killed on United Airlines Flight 175, and has donated clothing in New York.

The Home Depot is donating $1 million to the United Way. The company also donated power tools, flashlights, lumber, metal cutters, hardhats, generators, shovels, torches, and other merchandise in the affected areas.

The J. C. Penney Co. announced a combination of cash and in-kind contributions totaling at least $700,000 to support the disaster relief efforts in New York and Washington, D.C. JCPenney is offering car-mounted flags in its stores with proceeds going toward the relief effort. The company has donated socks, T-shirts and underwear to rescue workers.

Kmart Corp., in the days following the attack in New York, provided blankets, gloves, Visine, American flags and other items for the relief effort. Through its Manhattan stores, the company provided numerous essentials to the firefighters, police officers and rescue personnel working at "Ground Zero." The company has donated 50,000 hand-held American flags to the City of New York, and BlueLight.com is donating all proceeds from the sale of American flags and flag T-shirts on the web site, to the National office of the American Red Cross.

The Limited Inc. announced a $1 million contribution to the September 11th Fund established by the United Way and The New York Community Trust.

May Department Stores Co. announced a donation of $500,000 to assist with the relief effort and to aid those who are affected by the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

Party City has donated $25,000 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Petco Animal Supplies Inc. has donated bandages, booties, eye wipes, pet carriers and many bags of dog food to the rescue effort's K-9 divisions. The company is joining with many local animal welfare organizations in working to find new homes for the many newly homeless animals of the victims. Petco is raising funds in its stores for animal rescue organizations in the affected areas.

Saks Inc., partnering with employees and customers, has announced a $1 million assistance program for the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks through The September 11th Fund. Also, the company is selling special "remembrance" T-shirts with 100% of the proceeds going to The September 11th Fund.

Sears, Roebuck and Co. has pledged a minimum of $1 million in immediate relief aid, and has donated generators and other merchandise to the National Guard and relief workers. The company has coordinated blood drives and financial contributions in its stores. Sears has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of merchandise to assist the emergency response workers at ground zero, some of it contributed directly by Sears stores along the East Coast. Donated merchandise includes steel-toed work boots, work gloves, flashlights with replacement batteries, respirator masks, respirators with replacement filers, pairs of goggles and five-gallon buckets.

Starbucks Coffee Co. has donated to The September 11th Fund. Several store locations in Manhattan provided complimentary Internet access to help residents communicate with their families and friends. Stores in the New York and Pentagon areas served coffee to help support relief efforts.

Talbots is donating $100,000 to the Red Cross and is matching associates' contributions to the Red Cross, the September 11th Fund, the Salvation Army and the New York Times 9/11 Neediest Fund.

The TJX Cos. Inc. has established The TJX Family Memorial Trust Fund for the survivors of the seven TJX associates lost in the tragic events of September 11, 2001.
