Back-to-school expenses decline

Washington, D.C. – According to a survey conducted for the locally based National Retail Federation by Arlington Heights, Ill.-based Market Facts Inc, consumers are expected to spend 16% less this year on back-to-school items. The survey estimates that the average amount spent by shoppers this year will be $457 compared with $549 last year.

In addition, a number of consumers say they will conduct their shopping at several retail stores as opposed to "one-stop shopping." A total of 38.4% of those surveyed say they will need to make at least four shopping trips to get the job done.
