Gateway exiting Asian markets

San Diego – Locally based Gateway Inc. says it is closing down its operations in Japan, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. The news comes only five months after the computer maker shuttered 27 of its Country Store showrooms domestically.

The decision will result in the loss of roughly 1,345 jobs, which is nearly 25% of its global work force. Gateway said it will continue support, warranty and parts services in Asia. The company will take a charge of $475 million in the third quarter.
