Real Estate Execs Win New York Leadership Award

Two New York City-area real estate executives have received the annual “New York Ten Award” recognizing top leaders and innovators in the New York business community. Bruce Mosler, president and CEO-elect of brokerage Cushman & Wakefield; Barry Sternlicht, CEO of White Plains, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide; and eight other executives from various industries accepted their awards in late October from the New York Executive Council, a nonprofit business association. A panel of journalists from several New York-area media outlets selected the “New York Ten Award” winners.

Mosler was named president of U.S. Operations at privately held Cushman & Wakefield in September 2000, and the firm reports that he has created national leadership roles in industrial, multifamily and retail within the brokerage since then. The firm also credits Mosler with creating a “formidable U.S. retail platform.”

Sternlicht announced in October 2003 his plans to step down as chairman and CEO of the firm he founded in 1995. During his tenure, Starwood grew from a nearly bankrupt REIT with an equity market capitalization of less than $10 million, into the world's largest hotel company (measured by EBITDA), with an enterprise value exceeding $11 billion. Sternlicht is credited with the sharp growth of the firm and the successful integration of Westin Hotels and ITT Sheraton, the acquisition and expansion of Vistana, now Starwood Vacation Ownership, and the disposition of more than $8 billion in assets including the sale of Caesars World in 1999.
