Cafaro and the late Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. were pioneers in the shopping center industry, building strip plazas and some of the nation's first enclosed malls.

Cafaro's emergence as a real-estate developer began in the late 1940s. In 1950, he developed a supermarket for The Kroger Co. in Barberton, Ohio, and another in Akron, Ohio. The company's first major undertaking was Sharon Towne Center in Sharon, Ohio. Severalother projects followed.

The Cafaro Co. led the evolutionary trend in the shopping center industry with the development of enclosed shopping malls, beginning with the 1965 development of American Mall in Lima.

The Cafaro Co. developed one of the first superregional malls, Eastwood Mall in Niles, in the late 1960s. Over the years, The Cafaro Co. developed more than 70 commercial properties, totaling more than 37 million sq. ft.

Highlights of Cafaro's civic recognition include being named a "Knight of the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity" or Italian Cavalier by the president of Italy in 1970 and receiving the lifetime achievement award in 1996 from the National Italian American Foundation in Washington, D.C. He was honored by President Clinton in a video address as "a master builder who has helped build his community through long work in religious and civic activities."
