Retail Traffic

Not in my Backyard?

Well, maybe, say residents, as long as major concerns are met.

Nobody wants a retail development in their backyard, but what does “backyard” mean? A survey of how close is too close for comfort but close enough for convenience, found the ideal location to be seven to nine minutes drive from residents' homes. The study revealed, for example, that the majority (82 percent) — those concerned with issues such as real estate and sales tax revenues, landscaping, jobs, and road improvements — were predisposed to accept big-box projects if approached on the basis of those issues. Only 18 percent — those concerned most with noise and inconvenience — a small, but very vocal minority, opposed them.
