Cousins signals beginning of new era with appointment of new COO R. Dary Stone

One of the most highly regarded executives in the real estate industry, Dan DuPree, has resigned from Atlanta-based Cousins Properties. The position of president and COO will be filled by R. Dary Stone, chairman of Cousins Stone LP. Cousins bought a 50% interest in Stone's Dallas-based company in 1999, and Stone has been affiliated with Cousins ever since.

Usually, losing someone as highly regarded as DuPree could cause concern for Cousins stockholders, but analysts don't seem worried. Lehman Brothers continues to list the stock as a buy, even though DuPree was considered an unknown when he was first hired five years ago.

However, Cousins' direction as a company may change under Stone. Stone's background is in office development, while DuPree's background was in retail. As a result, it is likely that Cousins will emphasize office over retail development in the future, Lehman Brothers notes.

In addition to his real estate career, Stone is a fixture on the Texas political scene. He has served as campaign manager for current Texas governor Bill Clements, and is a former chairman of the Texas Finance Commission.
