For the third straight year, there were no great swings in our rankings of the top owners and managers of retail real estate.
Simon Property Group, which continues to top both the owners and managers rankings, did grow its portfolio by completing its acquisition of the Prime Outlets portfolio. Meanwhile, second-ranked General Growth—after spinning some of its properties into the Howard Hughes Corp.—saw its portfolio shrink from last year’s numbers.
Of note, the rankings here are based on what companies owned as of Dec. 31, 2010. As a result, Centro Properties Group makes the list at No. 5 despite the fact that the firm is in the process of being acquired by private equity giant Blackstone Group.
On the management side, CB Richard Ellis updated its methodology and jumps to No. 2 while Jones Lang LaSalle Americas leaped over CBL & Associates Properties by growing its portfolio.
