New Open Centers

CRAWFORD McWILLIAMS HATCHER ARCHITECTS INC. THE SUMMIT * Birmingham, Ala. In the category of New Open Centers, Crawford McWilliams Hatcher Architects Inc. (CMH), Birmingham, Ala., received an Honorable Mention for its design of The Summit, also located in Birmingham.

CMH conquered a mountain, as well as the variety of uses required for inclusion in The Summit. More than 3 million cubic yards of dirt were moved to construct 490,000 sq. ft. Phase I on top of a small mountain. The center was divided into three zones - a department store zone, an entertainment/power center zone and a neighborhood center zone, which is located closest to a residential community.

The center offers traditional mall-type retailers in an open-air format with an abundance of landscaping, customer amenities and architectural design features that go beyond offerings at traditional open centers.

The architecture captures the vitality of a Mediterranean hill town, complete with a vibrant streetscape. The tenants, which range from a freestanding flagship for Parisian to all four of Gap Inc.'s concepts, have individual looks.

Landscaped seating areas, intermingling with statues and fountains, also recall the old city squares of Europe.
