Hilton, City Finish $144M New Convention Center

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA—The $144 million redevelopment of the former Crowne Plaza Five Seasons into a new property is complete, as Hilton said it opened its new DoubleTree by Hilton Cedar Rapids Convention Complex at the U.S. Cellular Center on Monday.

The property was purchased by the city in 2011 to create a new convention center. Frew Development drove the project, which included updates throughout the hotel’s 267 guestrooms and the addition of a restaurant and bar.

Ron Corbett, mayor of Cedar Rapids, said the convention complex opening is a focal point of the tremendous transformation that has taken place in the downtown. “The completion of this project makes us a strong contender to compete nationally as a leading destination for meetings and events, and serves as a catalyst to boosting tourism to our culture-rich city,” he said in a statement.
