Downtown Pleasant Hill is a pedestrian-scaled, mixed-use project that brings a downtown feel to a suburban community that never had a downtown before. The project includes theaters, restaurants, a food market, drug store and soft goods retailers, as well as 58 two-story townhouses. While creating the atmosphere of a main street, Crescent Drive, parking is successfully addressed with a parking structure and parking behind the main street stores.

The design of the center includes a variety of architectural styles that are reminiscent of early 20th century historical prototypes as seen in many Bay Area downtown shopping districts. There is also a limited use of more contemporary building designs to enliven the overall pedestrian experience. A variety of building materials and architectural details have been used to enhance the uniqueness of each of the individual buildings. These materials include brick, tile, stucco and also limited amounts of wood.

Shop storefronts are varied in material, color and details to add interest and to accentuate the individual storefronts. The use of a variety of awning types, colors, designs and materials further strengthen the character of individual shops. The building designs also integrate the use of landscape elements in response to the warm climate. These elements include landscaped arcade structures to provide pedestrian orientation and trellises in seating areas to provide shade.
