Cadence McShane Completes Leed-Certified School Months Ahead of Schedule

The Houston office of Cadence McShane Construction Co. has completed construction of the 98,724 sq. ft. LEED--registered Patterson Elementary School in Houston. The project was undertaken on behalf of the Houston Independent School District.

By using state-of-the-art project management and scheduling methods, Cadence McShane was able to deliver the $13.7 million school five months ahead of the planned construction schedule, according to Chuck White, vice president and division manager of Cadence McShane Construction Co.

The two-story elementary school has 50 classrooms, a library, kitchen, cafeteria and basketball pavilion. It replaces an outdated 64,234 sq. ft., single-story facility that was originally built in 1958. The company will complete all site work and landscaping, as well as a surface parking lot featuring 94 spaces.

The new educational building was constructed to meet LEED Silver standards, and school officials are awaiting certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The school has energy efficient heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, lighting control and domestic hot water systems that provide operational cost savings.

The builder used a construction waste recycling system and incorporated environmentally-friendly building materials to support indoor air quality for the students and staff.

“Our construction professionals are well versed in the strategies and materials choices necessary to achieve success within this growing segment of the construction industry,” says White.

The new school is part of an $805 million bond initiative that voters approved in 2007. Sustaita Architects provided architectural services.
